General description of tasks

The installation technician is responsible for connecting residential customers to the ECN in accordance with established standards and installation processes. He reports to the external network team leader.

Specifically, he makes sure to obtain all the necessary information on the field to facilitate the preparation, installation, and repairs of the In-house Fibre from residential customers. He receives his appointments, prepares the necessary equipment, and proceeds with the installation. He ensures a high-quality real-time customer experience through functional, on-time installation, while providing direct support and advice on products and services. The installation technician must proudly represent the ECN, as he is often the only face-to-face contact the customer will have with the company. His work is carried out in accordance with the security codes, customer practices, as well as ECN’s procedures and policies.

Main responsibilities

Make installations and repairs of television, telephone, and In-house Fibre internet services for residential customers (80 %)

  • Drive to the appointed location.
  • Contact customers to notify them of his/her imminent arrival.
  • Upon arrival on site, conduct a risk assessment and take appropriate action as required.
  • Fill out the forms on the side doc website.
  • Wire poles and residential buildings with the appropriate tools.
  • Make repairs regarding residential services in accordance with established procedures.
  • Contact the residential services coordinator if problems arise during installation.
  • Ensure that television, and/or telephone, and/or internet services are functioning properly once the equipment is installed.
  • Explain the basics of how the service works to customers.
  • Fill out the Work Order on a tablet and include photos and speed tests to support it.
  • Conduct performance analyses using specialized equipment and carry out repairs.
  • Work in collaboration with Distributel analysts.
  • Make sure to clean up the work areas at the customer’s home.
  • Provide translation service (Cree) as needed for the customer.


Take note of the installation and repair appointments schedule and plan the necessary resources (10 %)

  • Consult the installation appointments schedule daily.
  • Plan material needs for the workday including equipment, tools, safety accessories and consumable materials to make the installations, and prepare your vehicle.
  • Pick up or make sure you get the necessary installation kits and validate their contents before travelling to the site.


Maintain and prepare equipment for installations and repairs of the following days (10%)

  • Perform daily inspection and clean the vehicle upon return.
  • Make sure to pass on the documents (order forms, photos when applicable, etc.).
  • Put battery-operated tools on charge to make sure they are available for the next day of work.
  • Make the inventory of consumable materials and equipment and make purchase requests as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Hold a general Health and General Certificate on ASP Construction’s worksites (an asset).
  • Having completed ASP Construction’s Fall Prevention Training (an asset).
  • Work-at-heights certificate (an asset)
  • Fluent in French and English (written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of the Cree language (an asset).

Technical skills and knowledge

  • Basic digital and computer skills (computer and smartphone).
  • Know how to work with the Office suite, mainly Outlook and Teams, and WhatsApp.
  • Knowledge of OSP-FTTH conception, of construction principles, and industry standards.

Job specifications

  • Bound to move to residential customers in the different communities served.
  • May require stays outside the place of residence (especially in the case of technicians based in Wemindji).
  • Governed by joint use contracts, contractor agreements, and CSA construction standards.
  • Regular day and week work schedule. However, the duration of the working day may be extended due to travel and problems encountered.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend support and intervention.
  • Work mostly outdoors in all seasons and in variable weather conditions.
  • Low to moderate stress level. Stress comes from external constraints, technical challenges, and time restrictions.

Efforts required

  • Requires moderate to high physical effort such as for loading different equipment over small distances and climbing ladders.
  • The position requires a level of physical effort when handling weights ranging from 40 to 50 pounds.
  • Requires concentration and sensory attention due to the many environmental elements to consider when performing the installations.
  • Handle equipment with vigilance and care.
